I was just wasting time browsing eBay, and I spotted this austion:

That praying Smette is a fake I can spot a mile away - her face is too thin, and she is also leaning to the left (as you face her) - something many of the fakes do. Being sold with her are #1 Grad, Praying Smurf, and Riding Candy Cane - three other Smurfs known to have been faked, and I'd bet anything they are fake too.
You can tell generally by the markings, which will be muddy and unclear, real markings are sharp and easily read. The fakes also tend to have sloppier seams. I don't recall offhand, but I think the thickness of the diploma gives away the fake on that one. Riding Candy Cane, the fake is the HK marking, can't remember how else to tell. Oh, and on the praying Smurfs, the injection mark on the real one is on their left foot, on the top side.
I started a fakes page, but can never find the time to add to it, there's a lot more out there than I talk about.
www.blueimps.com has a good fakes page I've referenced a lot, with links to others' fakes pages. One very good one is in German, but you can use a link there to translate the page to english and get the gist of the meaning...

Calvin: You know what I've noticed, Hobbes? Things don't bug you much if you don't think about them. So from now on, I simply won't think about anything I don't like, and I'll be happy all the time!
Hobbes: Don't you think that's a pretty silly and irresponsible way to live?
Calvin: What a pretty afternoon...
