Given what I said in the example above regarding the one-page story, by the same logic applied, Peyo himself was "guilty" of self-censorship. |

It was pretty much near accurate to the book which by the way I have never seen but heard about. |

Our country's rascism fear was just as great in the eighties as it is today. Yeah, I am convinced they changed from black to purple so as not to offend anyone.
I normally call these events "wussing" out as well, but in this case I totally agree with them making the change. It's a kids show, and while I do think kids are smarter than we think, I also understand that they are more sensitive. If anyone made the connection between black smurfs and african americans (yes, I know there was no intended connection, but people find them anyways) that could have hurt and confused thousands of children.
Now here's where it gets tricky . . . People of mixed african and caucasion descent where called (excuse my spelling) Mullatto or Mullano, which means (if my history proffessors were correct) "purple". And eight generation descendant of an african was called an "octamaroon" Octa meaning eight, and maroon meaning purple.
How many mixed generations of children were hurt by this outragous social comment???? When will the hate end??? Whose next in the upcoming smurf movies? I'll tell you who's next, its us italians!!!!! I just know they are going to make Italians look bad. You know how anti-pizza those litle blue haters are!!!
My wife is Native american, but I can't say that IMPS is going after them because the native american smurfs are adorable. But don't get me started and the smurf's extreme liberation of our children from the capitalist and socialist societies we enjoy into the communist indoctrination!

It was basically the same story, but I don't buy the "wussing out" theory considering that Peyo himself crafted a single-page story about Jokey Smurf painting himself green and acting like he's a Purple/Black Smurf. Of course, the joke was on him when he found out that he used indelible green paint. |

I think the cartoon version of The AstroSmurf was the best compared to the comicbook version -- besides having Smurfette as a Swoof, we also have the ubiquitous threat of Gargamel seeking after the Smurfs while they were busy entertaining Dreamy's fantasy of travelling to a different world in a spacecraft. Also note that in the beginning of the episode, Dreamy's previous attempts to fly were based on those of the Smurf who dreamt of flying from The Flying Smurf (a.k.a. A Smurf In The Air). |

Purple Smurf . . .
However, That is Almost tied with the evil Smurfette episode when she had black hair and was Gargamel's henchman. I like that one as well.
And I LOVED the AstroSmurf book, but I really don't think the cartoon did that story justice.
