How do you Smurf?
How did you get involved with Smurfs? Are you a collector? For how long? How many Smurfs have you got?
Post here and let us know more about yourself!

Re: How do you Smurf?
Hi there
I'm a 31 year old guy from Sydney, Australia who has been collecting smurfs since October 22nd 2003. I used to have a few smurfs as a child but they were stolen from me about 6 years ago so one day I just decided to replace all of those great music smurfs I used to have. One smurf led to another and so far I have over 2,050 different smurfs and tons of playsets, buildings and other smurfy merchandise. I went a bit mad collecting smurfs especially over the last 12 months but what can you do when you get bitten by the smurf bug. There are still many variations I am still after and hopefully I will be able to put up a website soon where I can display these smurfs and accessories and talk a little about each one.
Possibly the best thing about smurf collecting is the people that have become friends especially at these smurfy forums.....I think meeting great people helps you stay with this hobby longer as I may have stopped after 12 months if it wasn't for the friendships and the fun I have talking to them.
Take care
Dyar

Re: How do you Smurf?
That's my Birthday only 1971( Oct 22, the day Dyar started collecting!)that's a great day to start anything most notably...me!
I have always liked Smurfs, only recently elevated that feeling to Obsession. I don't know the exact date, but for sure it wasn't three weeks ago Friday as I was working...
My kids and I enjoy "playing" with them, telling stories etc.. We have a lot of fun.
I have been soliciting advice from you more seasoned collectors on what pieces are especially prized so when or if I come into possesion of one I can take it out of play rotation.
Most recently I received a Peewit, he adds a lot of flavour to our smurf band and is the unofficial leader, although I suspect a mutiny is afoot( William Wallace looks a bit shifty!)
What Joy did I have in my life before I found this site??

Re: How do you Smurf?
Hi there
i'm 28 years old french collector
when i was young, i used to have smurf each time i go to the dentist (iiiiirk) by my mom (now i know that was a good reason to buy cigaretts...)
in middle of 2001, i can't exactly remember why, i start to collect smurfs (i'm a very large collector, i collect a lot of unusual things, and crazy things), and registered to pete's board. I discovered then that smurfs were collected all around the world, and they were still produced.
Since those years, i doscovered a lot of informations (some of my old smurfs were fakes, other were very rare variations...) and today i still collect and have around 650 smurfs (+playset, buildings..) but i'm collecting only PVC smurfs, no stamps, no plush, no related objects.
My first goal 4 years ago was to have all normal smurfs, i know today it's impossible because my missing smurfs are too rare in france (i can get them, but i don't want to waste my money for this, it's only a passion)...

Re: How do you Smurf?
The earliest I can remember collecting smurfs is when I was 7 years old. I remember watching the cartoon and then my mom would buy me smurfs. This was in Omaha, NE. After that we moved to Europe (my dad was in the Air Force) and then my smurf collection really took off. When I lived in Belgium, a friend worked for a manufacturer that produced smurfs so I was able to get some smurf items, like a Welcome to Smurfland standup cardboard sign. It greets visitors to my smurf room. When we moved back to the United States, in the late eighties, it was already hard to find smurfs so I didn't start collecting again until 1999 when I discovered mushroomvillage.com and Ebay. I have almost one of every smurf and the ones I'm missing are the rare ones. I have relatives in Germany so I'm able to go their and keep up with my smurf items. Last year I got smurf chocolates. Yum!!! I'm working on my smurf room, my father-in-law built me some shadow boxes to display my smurfs, just need to get everything organized. I collect anything smurfy!!!

Hi LoveSmurfs
Excuse me for being geographically challenged but where exactly is Omaha?....I have been singing the Counting Crows song of the same name for a while now without knowing exactly where it is.....besides middle America apparently.
Also, do you mean those smurf chocolates that tingle?....I love those. I sometimes get sent some of those from a seller in Germany as a bonus along with some German beer in plastic bottles.......they go really well together.

Re: How do you Smurf?
Omaha is in Nebraska which is in the midwest United States.
Yes, I was talking about the chocolates that tingle. I didn't realize they had fizz until I ate one. It's like eating pop rocks with chocolate.
It is nice that your person in Germany shares them with you, not sure how they would taste with beer. Guess that will have to be my next adventure.

Rather nice actually.....
I received a huge box of smurfs and lined them all out and then opened a beer or two and ate my choccies and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Personally I like the vanilla ones in the blue box better but here is a pic of the other one in the red box and a very happy smurf in front.

Re: How do you Smurf?
Hi All,
I first started collecting smurfs at a young age. We lived up the road from a BP Service Station so on a Friday and Saturday night when my dad was on his way home from the local watering hole he would come in with a smurf for us kids so we had a lot of smurfs over the years they got lost, chewed etc.... After going through my old wardrobe at mums I came across a few smurfs and the bug bit me again. So here i am today collecting again. I don't have very many at the moment but I have only been seriously collecting this year.

Re: How do you Smurf?
Hi Jessimay
You mentioned a BP...was that in Australia? I am guessing it was by the watering hole comment.....lol.
When I was younger so much younger than today....(sorry I am singing again)....BPs were better than toy shops.....where else could you buy smurfs and sniff petrol fumes. How I wish they were available still at every BP......I would apply for work there......tell the boss to keep his money...I will just take all of these smurfs home instead.

Re: How do you Smurf?
Hi Dyar,
Yes we got our smurfs from the local BP in Australia.. The petrol fumes do bring back memories, it was like a toy store now you have jogged my memory on it all. Ahh those were the days. My parents still live near that BP and how it has changed now.

Re: How do you Smurf?
Well I only started collecting as a celebration of your birth Chrissy.....but you would of gathered that anyway.
Beware of the lead Guiitar Player......the rumour is he wants to start a solo career without the others. Although I don't think his music will be quite as unique as with his band...especially without the bagpipes.

Re: How do you Smurf?
Hi Jessimay
I now work very near the same old BP that I used to walk as a child and it has also changed so much just like your one. BPs used to be my favourite petrol station but now they are just the same as all the others unfortunately......if my plans to build a time machine are successful then I will let you come back with me and we can clean up on all of their smurfs......just need to choose what year to go back now.......any suggestions?
