Kiaora from NZ!

Kiaora (Hello!) everyone!

My name's Kereama I'm a 25yo smurfer from New Zealand.

I currently have around 350 smurfs figurines, (many doubles so about 200 individual moulds) and some which are very rare to find in New Zealand - I'm particularly proud of my lion-tamer, in excellent condition, complete whip and not a scratch, and also my windsurfer with original sail.

I've also in my time collected smurf liquid soap, bubble-bath and eau-de-toilette (all used unfortunately ) socks (also worn - as a child I didn't know better) jigsaw puzzles, books, teaspoons, boxes of matches from BP (which say "service with a smurf") and even cookie cutters.

I'm so pleased that for the first time in almost ten years I can buy smurfs again in my country - thanks to K-Mart, and have spent at leats a hundred dollars on them this week (they cost 5.99 each)

I'm not convinced that they are as good quality as when I was young, in fact I think that the new smurfs are very badly painted, but they are smurfs nonetheless. I'm old to Mushroom Village (I think the collectors catalogue here is brilliant) and new to the shroom room (LOL - I love the name ) I hope to meet many more collectors here from around the world so... Hi!

Re: Kiaora from NZ!

Welcome to the board! I was in the oz topic so have already said hi.
Great to have you here. And glad to hear New Zealand have smurfs in Kmart the same as us Australians! It is wonderful to buy smurfs in stores. I agree that the newer smurfs just aren't the same as the originals. I think they are made from something different now too so they are harder, the originals are soft and can bend (though bending is not advised).

Try not to blow your budget on smurfs hehe
I've brought all the smurfs I needed from Kmart now.

Re: Kiaora from NZ!

I like the new smurfs so long as they don't try(!!!!) to be "trendy", for instance didn't like the techno smurfs, hippie, hip hop etc. Also prefer them when not painted in China as don't think the colour blue they use really becomes them.

Welcome to the board Kereama.

Love the sound of the matchbox, if only service did still come with a smurf. I'd eat out/go the laundrette/buy petrol and anything else that comes with a service a whole lot more!

Kiaora Kereama

I like the sound of your other non PVC items like the matches....I am guessing they don't have blue heads on the match sticks but I have to ask if they do anyway?

You have a lot of smurfs in your collection so that's very impressive and it's great to hear that Kiwis can buy them in the shops as well.

Good luck with your collecting....not that it sounds like you need it....LOL

Re: Kiaora from NZ!

WOW - blue heads on the match-sticks would have been brilliant, but I don't know if people were such lateral thinkers back in 1981! ;)
The matches are original though and first released when BP partnered with the smurfs. I used to get a new one each time mum stopped in for petrol - it was SO exciting! I'm sure they were only 50 cents back then (rather than $6)

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Re: Kiaora from NZ!

Hi kereama,
I'm from Wellington too. Nice to meet a fellow Wellingtonian smurf collector!

I haven't been to these forums in a loooong time and it has changed a lot! Neither have a bought any smurfs for a long time *sigh*.
Once the bank account looks a bit healthier I will have to go to K-Mart and Trade Me and spend up large!

Off to browse the new forums...

Welcome Leaky!
I haven't been into my local Kmart here in Australia for a few months I don't think but the last time I was they still had plenty of smurfs. How is the supply down in NZ? Also a few months back Kmart Australia's got in the 3 small smurf houses. Have yours had these yet? I had already brought mine from David Jones, but when i checked kmart they only had 1 left on the shelve. So they would have sold well.... and quite fast too.

Welcome Leaky

Nice to see some more Kiwis here (please don't mention the league ok )

How long have you been collecting for?

I went to NZ on a football tour in my teenage years and had the best time. We played Mt Albert (and got our butts kicked) and stayed with a really nice family in Otara but I was often running away from gangs who wanted my footy jumper... .....those were the days...I had energy back then and was able to get away each time but I was more freaked out when the family said I shouldn't go down to the park by myself.

I hope you like it here
